Automobiles Engine

Automobile engine is a machine or device that transforms the chemical energy in fuel(hydrocarbon fuel) into mechanical energy for power with the help of combustion of this fuel. The automotive engine is also responsible for the functioning of the generator and various other accessories such as the power-steering pump and the air-conditioning compressor.
For Combustion point of view there are two types of automotive engines discovered,

(1) The Internal Combustion Engine (ignition process takes place inside the vehicle)
(2) The External Combustion Engine (ignition process takes place outside the vehicle)

The Internal Combustion Engine is popularly used over the world due to it design considerations. Internal combustion is a lot more efficient than external combustion and internal combustion engine is much smaller than an equivalent external combustion engine.
Types of automobile Engines
There are many types of automobile Engines depending on the function, fuel, and type of combustion. There are Two Stroke Engines, Four Stroke Engine, Petrol engines, diesel engine, etc. There are different kinds of internal combustion engines. foreample Diesel engines HEMI engines, rotary engines and gas turbine engines etc. on the other hand, a steam engine in old-fashioned trains and steam boats is the best example of an external combustion engine. The fuel (coal, wood, oil, etc) in a steam engine burns outside the engine to create steam, and the steam creates motion inside the engine.
Two Stroke Engine:
A two-stroke engine functions on only two strokes and complete the process of converting chemical energy into mechanical energy in only two strokes. The two-stroke engines are mostly used in mopeds, snowmobiles, lawnmowers and a few motorcycles. They are noisier, less fuel efficient and cause greater pollution. In Compression stroke the Fuel-air is mixed and compressed and ignited. In Power stroke the piston is pushed downwards by the hot exhaust gases. A refined version of the two-stroke engine is Bourke Engine. In Bourke Engine the strokes occur without the mixing of burnt gas and fresh incoming air. Bourke Engine have good fuel efficiency becuase of less friction between piston and cylinder walls.
Four Stroke Engine:
The Four Stroke Engine was invented by Nicolaus Otto in 1867. The four-stroke engine are used in cars, light aircrafts and large boats. Compared with the two-stroke engines, the four-stroke engines are less noisy, more efficient and larger in size. a four-stroke combustion cycle to convert gasoline into motion is composed of following four strokes,
1. Intake stroke
2. Compression stroke
3. Combustion stroke
4. Exhaust stroke
Components of Automobile engine:
Automobiles Engine is a complicated machine and have several parts, but for introduction purposes some of them are listed here,
Camshaft, Engine Oil System, Engine Mounting Bolts,Crankshaft, Engine Valve, Engine Overhaul Kits,Connecting Rod, Engine Block, Harmonic Balancer,Cylinder Heads, Engine Pulley, Piston, Crank Case, Engine Assemblies, Push Rods,Engine Belts, Engine Brackets, Valve train.
Some of the components are described below:
Camshaft:
In automobile engines a camshaft is a type of rotating device or apparatus which is used in piston engines for operating poppet valves. Camshaft contains a series of cams that regulates the opening and closing of different valves (both for inlet of fuel and outlet for exhaust of combustion or burned gases) in the piston engines. The camshaft works with the help of a belt(more generally known as timing belt), chain and a set different gears. There are several types of camshafts which are in use in different types of engines, a short list of camshafts is as below.
Cam Follower, Camshaft Lifter Kits, Camshaft Bearing, Camshaft Locking Plates, Spacer Ring, Camshaft Fasteners, Camshaft Push Rod.
Crankshaft:
In automobile engine the Crankshaft is a device, which converts the up and down movement of the piston into rotatory motion. This shaft is presented normally at the bottom of an engine and its prime function or duty is to rotate the pistons in a circular motion. Crankshaft is also connected to flywheel, clutch, main shaft of the transmission, torque converter and belt pulley. The main components of crankshaft are: Crank Pin, Crankshaft Oil Seal, Crankshaft Bearing
